First Week Back


We've had a hot first week back. Some of us have found it hard to get back into the swing of things after a long Easter break (including Mr Thomas and Mrs Roach).

In English we developed a character and setting by drawing them both. We then drew a story board to help structure our stories. Then we wrote our very own creative stories about anything we wanted. There were lots of different adventures.

In maths we continued to look at fractions, and started to look at how to find fractions of amounts:
Example (Hercules class want to show you)
Two thirds of nine
Nine divided by three equals three - divide the whole number by the denominator
Three times two equals six - we have multiplied the answer by the numerator
Two thirds of 9 equals six.

We have been making our own games in PE with Mrs Flower and we will be hopefully teaching Year 2's how to play them.

In Science we looked at different types of rocks and discussing their properties. Some of the rocks were:

  • marble
  • slate
  • sandstone
  • basalt
  • grantie
In Geography we looked at the atlas and looked at countries in the Northern Hemisphere. The hemispheres are separated by the equator.

This Week In Hercules

We've had a nice calm week back since our half term break. We have all picked a country for the World Cup who we will follow through the tournament. We have done some revision in English this week and next week will compare Axel and Professor Liedenbrock from our class book Journey to the Centre of the Earth.  We have carried on with time this week in maths and today we looked at Roman Numerals. This week in Hercules

This week we created a story board where we designed our stories using only pictures. The next day we wrote our stories from beginning to end. The stories were about travelling back to Ancient Egypt. We learned that the most important paragraphs are the setting and the character description because it grabs the readers eyes and makes them want to read the whole thing.  Mr Thomas was AMAZED by the stories that he read! We have carried on looking at fractions this week and started to look at equivalent decimals. We have completed lots of practice papers this week as it has been assessment week. We have done: Three Reading Papers (Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry) Three Maths Papers (Times tables, Arithmetic and Reasoning) An extended write  Next week we have a spelling test where the children will look at the 3/4 spelling list! What's happened this week?

This blog was written by all of us in Hercules! In English this week we have created our own characters for our stories which we will be writing next week. We have sketched them and described their personality and their appearance. Also, we have looked at adjectives that add meaning. e.g.  The wet water is not meaningful. "It is not meaningful because you would expect water to be wet" - Erin In Maths we have been learning about fractions. We have been adding fractions with the same denominator, as well as building our own fraction walls and ordering them from smallest to biggest too. We have also played our recorders to Year 4 and in PE we are learning new styles of dance. As well as this we have been continuing with our topic on Ancient Egypt.
